Tale of the Universe
This is a concerto for tuba and wind band, but also for orchestra and tuba. Every movement can also be played separated by itself, In that case I will recommend especially 1st and 2nd movement. The 3rd movement is great, but difficult. The duration of the whole concerto is abut 17 min, read more under:
Equinox - 1st mov.
Equinox for orchestra takes us on a small journey. It starts in a majestic style with underlined warnings, but soon the piece picks up and becomes more uplifting in character. With building blocks of moving musical ostinatos and enticing repetitions, and with this rhythmic light and flowing manner it all comes together.
Equinox has a mysterious and longing side to it, it really is a long story made in a short format. In terms of astronomy Equinox is the time of year when day and night are of equal length, occurring twice a year when the centre of the sun is directly over the Equator.
(duration: c.4.30 min)
Nebula - 2nd mov.
Nebula is a slow piece with poetic melodic lines and harmonies, in a rubato style. The sound is distant, mysterious and moving, like the meaning of the name Nebula, to do with the endless universe.
Nebula is a cloud of dust and gas in space, usually illuminated by one or more stars. Nebulae represent the raw material the stars are made of. Maybe in musical resemblance.
(duration: c.5.10 min)
Umbra - 3rd mov.
This movement is a very fiery movement, and it’s reminiscent of a distant Spanish musical heritage. Some of it has an influence from the composer and jazz piano player Chick Corea, one of my early influences and inspirations.
You find a lot of rhythm and challenges in this movement. If you, or your band undertake this challenge be prepared to spend some time on it.
In terms of astronomy; Umbra is the area of total darkness in the shadow by an eclipse, the dark central region of a sunspot.
(duration: c.7.10 min)
