Symphonic Tide
Music for wind band, but also for orchestra. This is a review from a local Norwegian paper after the premier of this orchestral piece, maybe this will give a picture of the piece:
¨The Jubilee concert also saw the premiere of Johan Modahl Leiva’s “Symphonic Tide for Orchestra”. Here the tidal waters definitely flowed! The work is thickly orchestrated and has two sections. The powerful opening is followed by a section with beautiful oboe and English horn solos where the massive is replaced with sounds of misty airiness. A fine performance by the strings throughout this landscape.
Then things pick up again. The music is almost filmatic and extremely varied. Especially rhythmic. You can hear rock riffs and funky elements from the fat wind section.
Then the next section reminds one of a Prokofiev intermezzo. Some passages throw us into something that can remind us of an early 1970s police show, with vehement conga drums whipping up the intensity. In truth something rather different from the usual things played by this orchestra. After some rhythmic difficulties at the start the musicians and conductor manage to give form to the piece. With enlightening playing especially from the wind and percussions sections. ¨
